The VEEP’s Economic Advisor with global expertise


President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled a dynamic team of experts to serve in key roles within the Office of the Vice President, supporting the government’s ambitious “Resetting Ghana” agenda.

Among the appointees is Prof. Sharif Mahmud Khalid, who will serve as the Vice President’s Economic Advisor, bringing unparalleled expertise and academic excellence to the table.

Prof. Sharif Mahmud Khalid’s career reflects a unique combination of academic brilliance, leadership acumen, and global perspective. His academic credentials are remarkable, boasting qualifications from some of the world’s most prestigious institutions:

  • University of Oxford, UK – MSc in Taxation Law (St Hugh’s College)
  • University of Law, UK – Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL)
  • Sheffield University Management School, UK – Executive MBA, Senior Leadership Programme
  • Henley Business School, UK – PhD in Accounting and Financial Management
  • Aberdeen Business School, UK – MSc in Energy Management
  • University of Cape Coast, Ghana – BA (Hons)

Prof. Khalid is also a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (RSA), a prestigious institution that has counted historical giants like Adam Smith and Nelson Mandela among its members.

With a strong academic foundation, Prof. Khalid has built an impressive career, exclusively working with elite Russell Group universities in the UK. His research, published in Chartered Association of Business Schools (CABS) Journals, underscores his commitment to advancing scholarship in business and finance.

As a leader in academia, he has supervised five PhD candidates to completion and served as an external examiner for top global universities. His ability to bridge academic theory with practical applications makes him a valuable resource in shaping economic policy.

Beyond academia, Prof. Khalid’s career has spanned global consultancy and research projects in countries like South Africa, Angola, and Mali. These experiences demonstrate his ability to navigate diverse economic environments and design solutions tailored to regional challenges.

As a member of the NDC’s Finance & Economy Committee, Prof. Khalid has contributed to shaping Ghana’s financial policies, solidifying his role as a key technocrat with deep insight into both economic and political landscapes.

In his new role as Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Prof. Khalid will leverage his vast academic and professional expertise to help steer Ghana’s economy. His focus will include developing sustainable economic policies, fostering innovation, and driving growth across key sectors.
