The Attorney-General, Dominic Ayine, has officially withdrawn all charges against Johnson Asiama, the former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), concerning his alleged involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank.
Asiama, along with several others, had been facing a range of charges including fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, conspiracy to commit crime, and violations of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Act since 2020.
The decision to drop the charges marks a significant shift in the ongoing legal proceedings surrounding the financial institutions’ demise.
In a related development, the government has also officially withdrawn all criminal charges against former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and the party’s Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen.
This brings an end to a legal battle that began in December 2019.
The two NDC officials were on trial over a leaked audio recording in which Ofosu Ampofo was allegedly heard discussing plans to instigate crimes and create insecurity in the country, with the intent of blaming the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
