Nuri Sahin sacked by Borussia Dortmund after Bologna defeat

Borussia Dortmund has parted ways with head coach Nuri Sahin after a string of disappointing results, including a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Bologna.

This marked Dortmund’s fourth consecutive loss across all competitions since the winter break.

The defeat left the team struggling in the Champions League, needing a victory against Shakhtar Donetsk in their final group game and favorable results elsewhere to progress to the last 16.

Domestically, Dortmund has started 2025 with three consecutive Bundesliga losses, dropping to 10th place in the league and sitting seven points adrift of the top four, jeopardizing their Champions League qualification for next season.

Nuri Sahin, 36, who previously played for the club in two stints, expressed regret at not meeting the club’s ambitions and wished them success.

He took over as head coach in June 2024, replacing Edin Terzic, under whom Dortmund had reached the Champions League final before losing to Real Madrid.

Dortmund sporting director Lars Ricken acknowledged Sahin’s efforts and stated that the decision to dismiss him was a difficult but necessary step.

Ricken emphasized the club’s hopes for a long-term collaboration with Sahin but concluded that the team’s continued struggles made the decision unavoidable.
