Three arrested for poaching in Mole Game Reserve

Three individuals suspected of poaching in the Mole Game reserve in Savannah Region, have been arrested by rangers of the forestry commission

The suspects, identified as Yonjie Domuo, 55, and Dari Kwabena, 24, were arrested during a routine patrol on Sunday January 26, 2025.

Four other suspects managed to evade arrest during the operation. Four locally manufactured single barrel guns were also retrieved.

Smoked carcasses of antelopes tied in two sacks were confiscated by the rangers.

The suspects were handed over to the Damongo District police.

Assistant Law Enforcement officer at the Mole Park, Martin Abodiba Ndego said the incidents of poaching in the mole game reserve is becoming too many.

“This is the third time we arrested poachers in January alone and these poachers go deep into the forest reserves to undertake these illegal activities.

“Let me state clearly that our rangers have a 24 hour surveillance operation in the forest reserve and will arrest and ensure the law takes it cause on them.”

On how to deal with the activities of poachers in the park, he revealed that it will involve a multi-faceted approach of using technology in surveillance and continuous education due to the vast nature of the park.

“The park is big and though our staff have intensified their patrols, we still record incidents of poaching and so we need to use technology to compliment the efforts by our rangers to ensure that the nooks and crannies of the park are always under surveillance.

“We have done community sensitization and we won’t hesitate to arrest and prosecute any poacher found in the park,” he added.

The mole national park, known for its elephant herds, antelopes, and exotic bird species is the largest and most prestigious protected area in Ghana and covers 4,577 square kilometers.
